Legendary German coach Ottmar Hitzfeld believes former clubs Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund can both win the UEFA Champions League this season.
The German Bundesliga currently has a 3/16 chance of producing this year's winner in Europe's elite club competition after Dortmund, Bayern and Schalke all successfully progressed out of the group stage.
Bayern are currently on the hunt for their fourth European Cup, BVB's only previous triumph came in the 1996/97 season, while the Royal Blues have never been crowned champions of the continent.
And while Hitzfeld believes the latter are unlikely to end that wait this season, he believes the other two have an excellent chance of seeing off the rest of the competition.
"I do not see Schalke [winning the Champions League] as they never have the necessary consistency," he told Bild.
"But I think both Dortmund and Bayern could win the Champions League.
"Much depends on the draw, but the fact is - the German league is as strong as ever."
The Switzerland boss was also quick to rule out a return to the Bundesliga, claiming he still has unfinished business with his current side.
"I cannot imagine returning any time soon," Hitzfeld added.
"I have a contract unitl 2014 in Switzerland and would like to go the the [2014 FIFA] World Cup in Brazil."
During his time at Dortmund, Hitzfeld won the Bundesliga twice and led them to the Champions League title, while he won the league five times with Bayern and also led them to European glory back in 2001.
