John set to have a Terry-ble Christmas

RAFA BENITEZ cannot give a comeback date for John Terry.
The centre-back, 32, last played for Chelsea against Liverpool on November 11 and is struggling to make any of the club’s festive fixtures.
He is definitely out of tomorrow’s game with Aston Villa due to a knee problem.
Blues boss Benitez said: “We know it is inflammation and a matter of time. The knee is complicated.
“He can be fine in the warm-up then he gets a problem. It’s one step forward, one back. He was training today, running on the pitch but not available.
“Not training with the ball, just warm-up. It’s positive news but I can’t predict when he’ll be available.
“I hope he’s available after Christmas but I can’t guarantee anything.”
The fact Terry is not even kicking a ball will be a major concern for everyone at the club though Benitez was confident Terry would not require further surgery.
But he would not be drawn on reports the former England captain was close to opening talks on a new contract — to replace the one that expires in 18 months.
Pressed on Terry’s importance to Chelsea — bearing in mind the huge difference in their win-loss record with and without their skipper — Benitez said: “If he’s the captain, it’s because he’s a player that can be a leader. He has a great character.”
With Terry out, David Luiz will remain in central defence against Villa but Benitez confirmed he will definitely return to midfield.
The Brazilian played there in last week’s Club World Cup semi-final win over Mexican’s Monterrey
And Benitez said: “I played him as midfielder and didn’t want to do it again for the final because it would have been too demanding for him because he’s a centre-back.
“We knew it was too demanding and thought he would not have the same fresh legs.
“But midfield is easier for him. At centre-back one mistake and everyone sees it.
“In midfield, it’s easier. He likes to play and enjoys going forward. I encourage him to try things.
“I’d be worried if a player is not trying things in the final third — and he likes to take risks where necessary.”
