Vilanova to have surgery

TITO VILANOVA will have surgery tomorrow after suffering a relapse of a tumour he had removed last year.
The Spaniard had emergency treatment last November to remove the growth on his parotid gland — the largest of the human salivary glands.
But the tumour has now returned and he will have surgery tomorrow followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy over the next six weeks.
Vilanova replaced Pep Guardiola in the Barca hotseat last summer and has taken them nine points clear at the top of La Liga.
The Catalan giants said the 44-year-old could remain in charge of the first team while undergoing his treatment.
But surgery will definitely rule him out of Saturday’s trip to Real Valladolid.
And reports in Spain suggest assistant manager Jordi Roura will take charge of first-team affairs during Vilanova’s absence.
A club statement read: “An extension of the pathology has been detected in the parotid gland.
“The manager requires surgery which he will undergo this Thursday. He is expected to remain in hospital for three to four days.
“After the surgery, Francesc ‘Tito’ Vilanova will undergo chemotherapy and rediation treatment for approximately six weeks.
“During this time, and depending on how well he recovers, Vilanova’s treatment may be compatible with his work life.
“Keeping in line with the patient’s wishes, we urge respect and privacy during this process.”
Barca's rivals Real Madrid have lent their support to Vilanova.
A statement on their website read: “Real Madrid want to express their support and best wishes for the coach of FC Barcelona, Tito Vilanova, and wish him a very rapid recovery.
“Real Madrid offer their support to his club and to all his family.”
Midfielder Xavi tweeted: “Very sorry to hear the news.”
And Manchester City and Spain midfielder David Silva posted: “All my support and best wishes to Tito and all of the people in the world fighting every day against cancer. Be strong #AnimoTito.”
