CHIN WAG ... Joey Barton talks in bizarre accent
BAD boy footie ace Joey Barton showed some Gaul yesterday — speaking in a daft French accent at a press conference.
The QPR star — on loan at Marseille — defended his yellow card against Lille on Sunday in a drawl out of sitcom Allo Allo!.
The midfielder said: “I make one tackle and all everybody speak about eez zis tackle. Nobody speak about the 50-yard pass.
“For me eet’s important people talk about the qualities I bring as a footballer.’’
Sounding like Allo Allo!’s “Good moaning” character Officer Crabtree, Barton, 30, also risked offending his hosts by adding: “Maybe the one criticism of the French league is eet’s a little bit boreeng.”
His hilarious accent was compared with ex-England boss Steve McClaren’s howler during his first stint as boss of Dutch club FC Twente.
He was ridiculed for his fake Dutch accent ahead of a 2008 clash with Arsenal, saying: “Championsh League, Liverpool or Arshenal, I thought one of them we would draw and it is Arshenal I think.
“I shay we’re not, what you call?, underdogsh but mashive underdogsh.”
Barton — serving a 12-match Premier League ban — took to Twitter and acknowledged his gaffe by posting a link to the embarrassing interview.
He said: “McClaren eat your heart out”, adding: “In my defence, it is difficult to do a press conference in Scouse for a room full of French journalists.
“The alternative is to speak like an Allo Allo! character.” He dubbed the drawl “Bartonese”.
Marseille beat Lille 1-0 to go joint top in Ligue 1. Before the game, Barton said: “I’m maybe too intelligent to be a footballer.”
