Roon-ing scared! Blues put frighteners on Utd ace Wayne

WAYNE ROONEY believes Chelsea’s Euro crown has given them the confidence to take the Premier League by storm this season.

Blues shot out of the blocks with seven wins and a draw and could go seven points clear of Manchester United with victory over their rivals today.

Rooney reckons the trip to Stamford Bridge will be tougher than ever as United bid to keep pace with Roberto Di Matteo’s side.

The England striker said: “They have started brilliantly.

“It’s clear winning the Champions League last season has given them a lot more confidence.”

Chelsea splashed £80million in the summer with Eden Hazard and Oscar the star buys.

And Rooney, 27, feels there is a new pace and vibrancy about the Chelsea side from previous seasons.

He said: “They have brought in some fantastic players and added more speed to the team.

“The important thing first of all is to make sure we defend well against them and then try and score.

“We have to make sure we are at our best to try and beat them.”

Di Matteo’s side beat Tottenham 4-2 at White Hart Lane last time out in the Premier League.

The golden trio of Juan Mata, Hazard and Oscar play behind Fernando Torres.
Rooney thinks it makes for a potent combination and despite some pundits writing off Torres as a star performer, Rooney does not agree.

He said: “Torres is still a threat, of course. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves because he works hard for the team.

“Sometimes the goals go in for him other times they don’t but he’s always trying.”

It is 10 years since United last won at the Bridge in the Premier League — although they did beat Blues 1-0 there in the Champions League in 2011.

Last season they battled back from 3-0 down to grab a draw. But United will be desperate to avoid dropping behind like that again.

Going 2-0 down against Braga on Tuesday was the EIGHTH time this season Alex Ferguson’s side have given opposition teams the lead.

Six times, including in their 3-2 Champions League triumph in midweek, United came back to win.

But Rooney admitted: “We can’t afford to do that this time.

“It happened against Braga and we did well to get back in the game and win it. But you can’t afford to be going one or two goals down against Chelsea away.”

The Premier League is building up into a classic three-horse race with Chelsea, United and Manchester City ready to scrap it out.

Rooney added: “There are a lot of games still to go but you always know it’s going to be a difficult league to win.
