Schweini back in Germany squad

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was recalled Friday to Germany's squad for World Cup qualification matches against Ireland and Sweden, but there no place for on-form former first-choice keeper Rene Adler.

Schweinsteiger had missed the first three matches since Germany's semifinal exit at Euro 2012 as he recovered from an ankle injury.

"It was always clear that Bastian would be in the squad against Ireland and Sweden," Germany coach Joachim Loew said in Frankfurt.

"We deliberately did not take him for the last games to give him the opportunity to get back in the training and match rhythm. His performances for Bayern show that this was exactly right."

Loew has made no other changes from the squad selected for the qualifying games against Faroe Islands (3-0) and Austria (2-1).

However midfielder Julian Draxler is out after fracturing his arm playing for Schalke in Wednesday's Champions League game against Montpellier.

Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Guendogan also later dropped out with a lower back strain which is expected to sideline him for two weeks. There will be no replacement.

Loew has overlooked for the time being his former No 1 keeper Adler, who has been in superb recent form for SV Hamburg after recovering from injury. The last of his 10 caps came against Sweden in November 2010.

Adler, 27, was first-choice ahead of the 2010 World Cup but missed the tournament in South Africa through injury and has only just returned to full fitness.

Bayern's Manuel Neuer has since claimed the No 1 spot, and Loew is sticking with Hanover's Ron-Robert Zieler and Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Borussia Moenchengladbach as deputies.

Loew said he saw no reason to change the current keeper line-up but that Adler had never been written off and could soon be back in contention.

"When injury-free he is a goalkeeper who can play at a very high level," he said. "I am personally delighted that Rene Adler has rediscovered this sort of form. He never lost belief in his abilities and has worked very hard."

Germany are well placed in European qualifying group C, but Loew warned that Ireland in Dublin next Friday and Sweden in Berlin four days later would be tough opponents.

"We know what sort of atmosphere we can expect in Dublin," he said. "In front of their own fans the Irish will be giving everything to beat us."

Sweden meanwhile "are not just all about their world class player Zlatan Ibrahimovic but are convincing as a team."

Both Ireland and Sweden won their opening qualifying games, both against Kazakhstan.

"We are in a very significant phase in which we can set the course for how the qualification progresses," Loew said. "We know we are the favourites in the group and that's why we want to be successful in both games."
