UNDER PRESSURE ... Chelsea chief Roberto Di Matteo
ROBERTO DI MATTEO refused to concede he is under even more pressure this season despite Chelsea’s astonishing £80million summer spending spree.
Owner Roman Abramovich has gone on his second biggest transfer splurge since splashing out a whopping £112m in the summer of 2003 when he bought the London club.
Boss Di Matteo will now be under intense heat to follow up his stunning Champions League and FA Cup double last year by winning back the Premier League title.
But he insisted: “Am I under more pressure? I already have enough pressure. The pressure is always there despite the new signings.”
As for Chelsea’s title chances after finishing sixth last year — their — lowest finish of the Abramovich era — Di Matteo said: “We need to make up 25 points and I don’t think any team has done that in the history of the Premier League.
“It’s a big gap we have to fill. We will try our utmost and hopefully be able to compete.
“City haven’t lost any key players and finished 25 points ahead of us last year.
“United had the same amount of points and they have signed Robin van Persie. I think they are still the two teams you need to beat.”
Di Matteo tied up a £8m deal for Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta, 22, from Marseille yesterday.
And £9m Wigan winger Victor Moses, 21, followed after undergoing his medical last night.
That pushed spending just past an incredible £80m — the most spent by any club this summer.
Moses is the fourth quick and tricky attacking midfielder Di Matteo has added to his already star-studded squad this summer after Marko Marin, Eden Hazard and Oscar.
But Di Matteo reckons there will be enough games to go around. He said: “Keeping players happy is an issue that every manager has. It’s almost impossible to keep everyone happy. When you don’t play you do get a bit frustrated in that sense.
“Towards the end of last season we had some games when we were really struggling, especially the last game, the Champions League final.
“We had suspensions and injury and it was a struggle to get enough players ready for that game.
“But it’s a busy season — everybody will get enough football time.”
Whether ruthless Russian Roman will be as relaxed as the season progresses remains to be seen. But Di Matteo added: “Even without spending money I felt he backed me.
“He gave me the confidence last season and ever since I feel I have his confidence. He is trying to build a good team and be successful as much as we can together.”
