LA Galaxy Results After Big Losses: Fan's Analysis

I have a say

The Los Angeles Galaxy will enter the third edition of the 2012 SuperClasico against Chivas USA coming off L.A.'s worst loss of the season (4-0 to the Seattle Sounders). Is there anything in the Galaxy's history to tell us about how the team might respond after such a big loss?

Worst Loss In LA Galaxy History

The LA Galaxy are one of MLS' original franchises and have been playing continuously since the 1996 season. The worst loss for the Galaxy franchise came in 2002 against the MetroStars (now New York Red Bulls). The MetroStars won that match 5-0 on four goals from Mamadou Diallo and one by Brad Davis. The MetroStars were not a playoff team that season and the Galaxy went on to win their first MLS Cup title and second MLS Supporters' Shield. Immediately after the loss to the MetroStars, our side responded with a 3-0 shutout of the Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas).

Recent Big Losses

The Galaxy's last 4-0 loss before Seattle happened twice in 2008 against the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas. Neither Colorado nor Dallas made the playoffs in 2008 while the Galaxy finished second to last in MLS. The Galaxy also led MLS in goals scored and conceded in 2008. After both 4-0 losses, the Galaxy played the San Jose Earthquakes, defeating the Quakes 2-0 in the first game and falling, 3-2, in the second match.

SuperClasico

One thing all of the 4-0 or 5-0 losses had in common was that they all came on the road. The Galaxy was the home team in their two wins and the away team in their loss following the big losses. The Galaxy will be the away team in the SuperClasico on Aug. 12. In 2012, the Galaxy are 1-1-0 against Chivas USA. The most recent match, a 3-1, Galaxy win, came during L.A.'s 4-1-1 July which propelled them into the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Goats are in sixth place in the West and sit seven points behind the Galaxy.

This year's Galaxy squad is more like the 2008 side than the 2002 team but I still expect them to rebound against Chivas and improve their playoff positioning.
