Roberto Mancini won power battles
MUSCLE ... Man City boss Roberto Mancini got his own way before signing deal

ROBERTO MANCINI won a host of power battles before signing a new contract at Manchester City.

Talks over the five-year deal, worth £37.5million, began two months ago but the sticking points were never about money.

Boss Mancini wanted assurances over his control of certain aspects at the club as he aims to push it forward to further success.

The Italian, 47, wanted more direct control over transfers and also requested a reorganisation of the medical department.

He has been at loggerheads with club chiefs about how that side of the operation at Carrington has been run for some time.

Mancini was furious last season when top-scorer Sergio Aguero missed key games against Stoke and Sunderland after his foot was burnt by a spray applied by one of the backroom staff.

At the time, Mancini believed it could have cost City the title as they drew both games and United went back on top.

Mancini has also stood firm this summer over plans for the club’s pre-season tour.

Club officials were hoping to have a longer tour of Asia to help boost City’s global appeal.

But Mancini insisted on a short six-day trip and just two games.

There was some disquiet within the Etihad over the timing of an offer from the Russian FA for Mancini to become boss of their national side.

But he never used it as a bargaining tool and has now been rewarded with a deal that makes him British football’s top-paid manager.
