Mathijsen plays down injury fears ahead of Euro 2012

I have a say

Netherlands defender Joris Mathijsen is optimistic that his hamstring problem will not rule him out of Euro 2012.

The Malaga center-back sustained the injury during Saturday's 2-1 friendly defeat to Bulgaria, and the 32-year-old is set to be examined at Hoenderloo on Monday.

"I assume it will be nothing serious," Mathijsen told De Telegraaf. "Let's hope for the best."

Mathijsen had started the game against the Bulgarians but pulled up limp after just 16 minutes, and was promptly replaced by Wilfred Bouma.

An initial scan revealed no tear, but the severity of the injury has yet to be determined, meaning the former Hamburg defender is, at the very least, a doubt for his country's tournament opener against Denmark on June 9.
