Portland Timbers 1-1 Vancouver Whitecaps: Rain-sogged match sees Scottish goal

A single Scotsman scored in the United States tonight and, no, he wasn't with his compatriots in Jacksonville, Fla.

Portland Timber Kris Boyd, suiting up in the scarlet of his club rather than the navy of his country, snuck to the back post and volleyed past Joe Cannon a rebound from the keeper. The 67th-minute goal, the struggling Boyd's fourth of the season, broke the deadlock with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Across the country, the Scottish national team needed the help of Geoff Cameron, the American center back who deflected a Kenny Miller header into Tim Howard’s goal, to muster a goal.

Darren Mattocks, however, dampened the evening for the already soaked supporters at JELD-WEN Field – the officials suspended the start of the second half due to heavy rain - as the rookie's first MLS goal equalized the Cascadia Cup tilt. At the edge of the penalty area, Eric Hassli rose above his markers and knocked down a free kick into the Timbers' box. Mattocks latched onto the header, chested past a defender, and deposited the bouncing ball into Troy Perkins' net with a firm finish.

The goal would be the match’s last, splitting the points between the rivals from the Pacific Northwest.
