Celtic striker Hooper eyeing England Euro 2012 call-up

Celtic striker Gary Hooper hopes Roy Hodgson will provide him with an opportunity in the England squad, admitting his frustration at previously being overlooked.

The newly-appointed manager is expected to name his 23-man squad for Euro 2012 at 13:00 BST on Wednesday, and the London-born 24-year-old is holding out for a chance to impress the new manager as part of the national set-up.

The former Scunthorpe forward has netted 29 goals this season and has admitted his frustration at having previously been overlooked despite his impressive form, and feels Hodgson may now look to him to play a role at international level.

Hooper told the Press Association: “It's hard to say what Roy Hodgson should do because he's just got the job. But maybe a few new faces could freshen up the squad and help the other players.

"When Capello was manager I thought he just looked in the Premiership for English players, but with Roy Hodgson it could be different. He's a top manager and I personally feel I've got another chance to play for England now."

Having played in the Scottish Premier League for the past two years, scoring 22 goals in his first Hoops campaign, Hooper has become a favourite at Celtic Park and the uncapped frontman is desperate to play a part for his country in Ukraine and Poland.

Hooper added: "Maybe I might need to play in England sometime in the future but if I keep scoring the goals they can't keep looking away and I should get a chance.”
