PSV has confirmed that that Mark van Bommel has rejoined the club on a free transfer, after parting company with AC Milan.

The Netherlands international has penned a one-year contract with the side he won four Eredivisie titles with between 1999 and 2005.

Van Bommel's return to Eindhoven has been on the cards ever since it became clear that he would not be extending his stay at San Siro and PSV technical director Marcel Brands is thrilled that the club has finally managed to thrash out a deal with the midfielder.

"This has been a very long and drawn-out transfer that we have been working on," he told the Dutch club's official website.

"We are pleased that we have finally succeeded in re-signing such an internationally experienced player, who has a great history with PSV and who remains a leader of the national team."

Van Bommel, who has been capped 71 times by his country, left the Philips Stadium seven years ago to join Barcelona, but he only spent one season at Camp Nou before joining Bayern Munich in 2006.
