The Football Association has slammed British newspaper The Sun for its "disrespectful" headline following the appointment of Roy Hodgson as England boss.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid's headline on Wednesday read "Bwing on the Euwos", mocking the former Liverpool boss' speech impediment.

While the FA has not launched a formal complaint against the publication, it has condemned the "unacceptable" nature of the headline.

A statement on the FA's website read: "The FA and the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) have today received a large number of objections relating to the front page headline in The Sun newspaper, regarding Roy Hodgson’s manner of speech.

"On this occasion, we will not be making an official complaint to the PCC but we have raised it with the newspaper and made it clear that their front page is unacceptable to us."

Despite this isolated incident, FA chairman David Bernstein expressed his satisfaction with the media reaction to an appointment which took many by surprise.

“We are delighted at the media response to Roy's appointment but are disappointed with the headline in The Sun, which we consider is in poor taste and disrespectful,” he added.
