Bologna edged out Catania 1-0 to leapfrog their opponents in the Serie A standings.
Gaston Ramirez scored the only goal of the game 11 minutes from time to silence the fans at the Angelo Massimino stadium.
The win extended Bologna's unbeaten run to six games and lifted the Rossoblu to ninth place, one point clear of Catania with two games left to play.
Bologna travelled to Sicily having secured their top-flight status thanks to Sunday's 3-2 triumph over Genoa and unbeaten on the road since February 19.
Catania, looking for only their second win in eight games, had the first chance of the game in the 19th minute.
Nicola Legrottaglie's header from Francesco Lodi's dangerous cross was kept out by Bologna goalkeeper Federico Agliardi.
Before half-time, Catania goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo was called upon to make a save from Robert Acquafresca's low drive from the edge of the area.
Carrizo made sure Bologna did not take a 54th-minute lead when he kept out Ramirez's goal-bound effort from the heart of the area.
Catania had a good chance to break the deadlock in the 72nd minute but Gonzalo Bergessio's poweful header from Giovanni Marchesse's cross was saved by Agliardi.
Bologna then went in front. Giorgy Garics fed Ramirez just outside the area and his left-footed shot towards the top right corner of goal beat Carrizo.
The hosts had a chance to equalise at the death after Francesco Lodi fed Bergessio, only for the striker to send the ball wide.
