The Holland international has caught the eye of scouts from a number of major clubs by scoring 23 times in 29 league matches this term.

Liverpool are among the sides monitoring his progress, as Kenny Dalglish searches for a prolific goalscorer to play alongside Luis Suarez.

The Dutch club, managed by Steve McClaren, are well aware of the interest in the 21-year-old and have now given him a £12.5million price tag in the hope of deterring bids, reports De Telegraaf.

De Jong fits the profile of young player the Reds are keen to bring in and, with Dalglish set to be handed a £20million transfer kitty for the summer, they could afford to match Twente's valuation.

Newcastle have also been linked with De Jong, but their level of interest will depend on what happens with Demba Ba.

The Senegal striker has a £7million release clause in his contract and it is thought Spurs will try to activate it this summer, but Magpies boss Alan Pardew is confident he can persuade Ba to stay at St James' Park.
