Dalglish: Now let’s go on a run
REDDY TO RUMBLE ... Kop stars enjoy their shootout win

KENNY DALGLISH hopes his Liverpool stars have a taste for trophies now the Carling Cup is in the bag.

The emotional Kop boss saw a six-year wait for silverware end at Wembley yesterday.

He marked his first full season back in charge with a nailbiting penalty shootout triumph over Cardiff from the Championship.

Now Dalglish, together with American owners John W Henry and Tom Werner, want the club to kick on after their first slice of success since the 2006 FA Cup and keep the trophies pouring through the Anfield doors.

King Kenny, close to tears after the 3-2 penalties win, insisted: "I think this will inspire the players.

"I don't think anyone has ever won a trophy either at Wembley, the Millennium Stadium or in Europe and not come away without enjoying it.

"It must give you a taste for more.

"That doesn't mean to say it's going to happen but it can have an impact.

"We are here because of all the hard work everyone has put in, not just me.

"It's also down to the owners and the players and the closer we are the better we will be.

"Everyone has worked as hard as they can to take the club forward. We have won a trophy but that is not us finished.

"We deserved our first trophy in six years but need to continue to work hard and see where it takes us.

"We didn't think six years ago it would take this long to win our next one.

"We have won it, we will really enjoy it and it will give us a wee flavour to come back and do it again.

"Every member of the squad has contributed to this and worked really hard to get here.

"Now we need to see if we can kick on after the international break."

Henry, frontman for Kop owners Fenway Sports Group, admitted his nerves were in shreds throughout the shootout.

Yet after savouring the victory, he is also convinced it can be the first of many — with the FA Cup next on the horizon.

Liverpool face Stoke at Anfield in the sixth round.

Henry said: "The penalty kicks were tortuous but it's great that, after all these years, with you guys having to write about things off the field, finally you can talk of us making progress with what's going on on it.

"It's the first step to take us in a direction we want to go. Our supporters have been through so much off the field.

"To win the silverware for the first time in six years is to bring back the kind of excellence they are used to.

"They want to see that emerge again and this is the first step. There is an intensity to every match and I feel a wreck, so I can only imagine how our fans feel.

"Now we need to win the FA Cup, though realistically the next step is to beat Stoke. We'd be extremely happy to do that and take it from there.

"Everything about owning Liverpool has surprised us. This win is good on every level.

"We've a long way still to go but we had so much to learn in a year of all aspects of the sport and we're still learning.

"This is a great first step towards what we want to accomplish."

Chairman Werner declared: "It was a nerve-wracking afternoon but a wonderful result.

"It's a great day for Liverpool. My nerves were shot and I didn't watch the penalties, just heard them.

"There was a lot of pressure on Kenny, so we're relieved for him. The expectations were so high.

"He deserves an enormous amount of credit and now we can move on. Our goal is still to reach the Champions League but this has been a big day for us.

"It's a privilege to be involved with Liverpool and I hope this is a statement.

"Even though it's only one marker, it gives us the enthusiasm to move forward."
