Dalglish: Go for best Brit boss ... Fergie

KENNY DALGLISH reckons the FA's first call in their hunt for England's new boss should be to Alex Ferguson.

Liverpool manager Dalglish has had an uneasy relationship with the Manchester United boss over the years.

Yet he is still convinced Fergie has to be the first port of call because his fellow Scot, 70, has been such a winner.

Ferguson is without peer when it comes to picking up silverware and, in Dalglish's eyes, that makes him the obvious starting point when hunting for

Fabio Capello's long-term successor.

The Kop boss insisted: "It's logical isn't it? The FA should be looking at the one who has had the most successful results since the Premier League started.

"You may not get him but you keep going. OK, they'd probably get a 'no' but they have to start there, and then go down the list of people who've had success with British players."

If picking up silverware is the most important credential, then Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger would be considered.

And below them would be Dalglish, a Premier League winner with Blackburn, on top of his trophy-laden days in his first stint as Liverpool manager.

Dalglish, 60, has no interest in the job even if the FA do decide to call. Yet he does not think the role has to go to an Englishman despite Harry Redknapp being a candidate.

He added: "I don't know if nationality matters. What does is that they have an understanding of the league.

"They need to know what they're going into and the mentality of the people they're going to manage, and not just the players but the country itself.

"But if they're getting results it doesn't matter — Giovanni Trapattoni has done a magnificent job with Ireland.

"There are non-nationals who have been successful but it's always better to have an understanding of what you're managing."
