Nevertheless it is the souring of Mourinho's relations with key stars in the dressing room that would still prove his undoing – not whether Real win trophies.
As long as Mourinho is in charge of Real there will be speculation about his future – and that frankly is the very proof there are insurmountable problems.
Put it this way – can you imagine chief executive David Gill coming out to say Alex Ferguson would continue as Manchester United boss if they were seven points clear at the top?
The fact is, Real Madrid are talking about Mourinho's future because it IS in question.
