Daniele De Rossi is close to agreeing terms for a new contract at Roma, despite strong interest from Manchester City.

Citizens boss Roberto Mancini has made no secret of his desire to add the Italy midfielder to his squad, while Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is also known to be a big fan.

The 28-year-old's current Roma deal expires at the end of the season and he is now able to open negotiations with other clubs about a free transfer move in the summer.

Mancini had hoped a lucrative salary package would tempt De Rossi to move to England, but the star is apparently keen to remain in the Italian capital.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the player is happy with Roma's latest contract offer and could commit his future to the club as early as next week.

The deal is said to be worth £5 million a season before bonuses, and at five years long, it may mean the midfielder spends his whole career with the same club.
