Alex Ferguson: Pleased to see Red Devils win to go level on points with rivals City
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased to claim a 5-0 win over ten-man Wigan despite his squad being plagued with injuries.
The Red Devils drew level on points at the top with rivals Manchester City after a Dimitar Berbatov hat-trick and goals from Park Ji-sung and Antonio Valencia sealed the Old Trafford win.
Ferguson was pleased with the way his side played despite being injury-plagued, with Jonny Evans the only recognised centre-back at the start and the Northern Irishman himself having to be replaced at half-time with a calf injury.
The United boss told Sky Sports: "The result pleases me considering the injuries we've had.
"We had ten players missing today and then Jonny Evans is taken off at half-time which - if it had been a closer game - we'd have worried about that because we ended up with a back four that has never in its life played together.
"So we're very pleased in getting a result like that."
Harsh
United's task was made much easier on 39 minutes when - leading 1-0 - Conor Sammon was sent off after catching Michael Carrick in the face.
Ferguson added: "I think in challenges like that you do run a little bit of a risk - it was a bit harsh, I have to say it was a bit harsh."
United are traditionally stronger in the second part of the season and Ferguson is delighted to start the New Year level on points with arch-rivals City.
"As I say, we get to the start of the year, if we're joint with City, I'll be happy with that."
