Sporting Clube de Portugal beat Nacional de Madeira in Lisbon 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from American defender Oguchi Onyewu.
The win extends Sporting's home win streak to nine in all competitions.
The goal came 22 minutes in. Former Liverpool defender Emiliano Insua nodded on a Andre Martins free kick, and Onyewu out-jumped the goalkeeper at the far post to head home.
Though that ended the scoring, it certainly didn't finish the excitement. Ricky van Wolfswinkel had a goal disallowed for Nacional because Diego Capel was offside when he crossed, and Danijel Stojanovic was sent off in the 77th minute.
The win keeps Sporting four points off Porto at the top of the Portuguese standings.
