Andre Villas-Boas: I’d still buy Fernando Torres for £50m
GOOD VALUE? ... AVB is backing under-pressure Chelsea striker Torres

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS insists he would still pay £50million for Fernando Torres.

The most expensive player in British history has so far cost Chelsea £10m a goal.

And he is in danger of becoming a record-breaker for the wrong reasons — as the game's biggest flop.

But loyal Blues boss Villas-Boas, who inherited Torres in the summer, said: "Is he still worth that money? Would I pay £50m for him? Of course I would.

"At the moment Fernando's best moments in terms of scoring were the Liverpool days.

"That does not mean those days won't arrive at this club and that does not mean he is not performing for the team because he is."

AVB is standing squarely behind the shot-shy Spaniard as he prepares to face his old club tomorrow.

And he added: "Isolate the last four months with the goals he's scored. It's not bad. A striker is not just there to put the ball in the net. He's there to create.

"We create enough opportunities if we win or lose games. It's creation of opportunities.

"At the moment, our best goalscorers are our two midfielders. For them to finish, someone is creating.

"The team is, so I'm happy at the moment.

"He's one of the best assisters at the club. Four or five. He's assisting people and the team are getting wins.

"Sometimes we don't get all the wins we wanted but we get the opportunities for us to win games.

"Fernando has picked up from last season. Not only with his form physically but also his movement for us."

Torres has hit four goals this term — one against Manchester United, two in a 5-0 European rout of Genk and one against newly-promoted Swansea.

But has also missed sitters against United and Blackburn.
