AC Milan moved up to third in Serie A with a crushing 4-0 defeat of Catania.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring with a seventh-minute penalty while Robinho, a Francesco Lodi own goal and Gianluca Zambrotta were all on target as Milan claimed their fifth successive league victory.

The hosts went ahead after their first meaningful attack. Davide Lanzafame fouled Robinho in the box and Ibrahimovic sent the ball into the bottom left-hand corner from the spot.

Catania almost hit straight back, Christian Abbiati saving Alejandro Gomez's left-footed shot before Adrian Ricchiuti drew another stop from the home goalkeeper.

However, Milan doubled their lead after 24 minutes, Robinho shooting into the bottom left corner of the goal from Ibrahimovic's pass as he crowned a counter-attack.

Ibrahimovic was heavily involved and he played in Clarence Seedorf, whose close-range shot was saved by Mariano Andujar before the Dutchman then shot narrowly wide.

Robinho was twice just wide and Massimo Ambrosini and Thiago Silva both had efforts on target as the first half drew to a close with the hosts well on top.

Gonzalo Bergessio put a shot well wide for Catania as the second half started quietly.

Robinho had yet another effort, this time a right-footed shot well saved by Andujar after more good work from Ibrahimovic, as the Milan pair showed great understanding and interplay.

It was almost inevitable they would get another goal and it duly came in the 69th minute when Lodi deflected the ball into his own net from a Robinho shot.

Milan got their fourth three minutes later when Zambrotta's left-footed shot was fired into the centre of the goal.
