FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—Bayern Munich routed second-division Ingolstadt 6-0 Wednesday to ease into the third round of the German Cup despite using mostly reserve players.

Nils Petersen scored twice as Bayern netted five goals in the second half.

Title holder Schalke got late goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Joel Matip to win 2-0 at second-division Karlsruhe.

Mainz won 1-0 in extra time at Hannover, in the only match pitting two top division teams against each other. Hannover beat Bayern in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Second-division Duisburg lost 2-0 at fourth-tier Holstein Kiel to get knocked out after reaching the final last season.

In Munich, a deflected shot by Thomas Mueller put Bayern ahead after 33 minutes as the Bundesliga leader failed to translate its dominance into goals against the bottom side of the second division.

But Bayern broke down Ingolstadt’s defense after the break, with David Alaba doubling the lead in the 49th. Petersen then added his two, Marvin Matip deflected Rafinha’s shot into his own net and Takashi Usami completed the rout in the 90th with his first goal for Bayern.

Andreas Ivanschitz scored in the third minute of extra time to end an eight-game winless run for Mainz. Hannover missed a chance to even the score in the third minute of stoppage time when a penalty by Didier Ya Konan was saved by Mainz goalkeeper Christian Wetklo.

Huntelaar scored in the 81st and Matip completed Schalke’s win two minutes later in Karlsruhe.

Richard Sukuta-Pasu netted in the 119th minute to give Kaiserslautern a dramatic 1-0 win at second-division Eintracht Frankfurt in extra time.

Hertha Berlin cruised past fourth-tier Rot-Weiss Essen 3-0 on goals from Adrian Ramos, Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Nikita Rukavytsya.

Nuremberg edged second-division 2-1 with Alexander Esswein and Markus Mendler scoring in the second half.

Christoph Hemlein, Cacau and Ibrahim Traore scored to give Stuttgart a 3-0 win over second-division FSV Frankfurt.
