Posted Monday, October 17, 2011 by YAHOO Sport
On Sunday October 23, 2011, Manchester United and Manchester City will play at Old Trafford for the top spot in the Barclays Premier League. Here is a preview of this highly anticipated match.
Battle of the Unbeaten
United and City currently sit atop the Premier League. On Saturday October 15, 2011, City moved to the top of the Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa. United are currently second. Both teams are undefeated in the Premier League this season. That may change on Sunday.
Rise of City
City moved into the top spot of the Premier League for the first time this season. They boast a record of seven wins, one draw and no losses. City currently lead the Premier League in goal differential (+21) and goals scored (27).
Defending Old Trafford
United relinquished the top spot in the Premier League last Saturday. But they remained undefeated. United are difficult to defeat at home. They have not lost a Premier League game at Old Trafford since losing to Chelsea 2-1 on April 03, 2010. United are undefeated in 25 straight Premier League games at Old Trafford.
All the Right Moves for City
The recent signings of Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero have paid off so far for City. Aguero and Dzeko rank second and third in scoring, respectively. City signed the 25-year old Bosnian striker Dzeko in January 2011. Aguero, the 23-year old Argentinian, signed with City in July 2011. Both high-priced players have already proven their worth.
Tough Times for Wayne Rooney
United striker Rooney leads the Premier League in scoring, but October has been a difficult month for him. His manager Sir Alex Ferguson relegated Rooney to the bench on Saturday to help him cope with his recent troubles. On Thursday October 06, 2011, his father, also named Wayne, was arrested for his role in an alleged gambling ring involving Scottish Premier League games. On Thursday October 13, 2011, Rooney was banned for three European Championship matches for his red card against Montenegro player Miodrag Dzudovic. The pressure has gotten to Rooney. Will he be ready to face City on Sunday?
United and City are the top two teams in the Premier League. They will face off this Sunday to determine the top spot. The two teams have been on a collision course since the start of the season. Now they will face off in the most anticipated Premier League match of the year.
