SUNDERLAND, England (AP)—The Texas businessman who owns Sunderland is taking over as chairman of the English Premier League soccer club.
The team says Ellis Short will replace Niall Quinn, who is giving up his work as chairman to spearhead international development of the team.
Short says new financial regulations make it “essential for the long-term success of the club that we develop interests on a global scale.” Short assumed full control of Sunderland in 2009 after buying a stake the previous year.
