Skipper Fabricio Coloccini wants to spend the rest of his career at Newcastle.
And the Argentine is ready to follow in the footsteps of close pal Jonas Gutierrez and open talks on a new contract.
Gutierrez signed a four-year deal this week and while Coloccini has two years left on his current contract, the 29-year-old has made it clear he sees his long-term future at St James’s Park.
The centre-back is thought to be the club’s biggest earner, with weekly wages over £80,000, and knows that the days of the Toon paying big salaries are over.
But Newcastle appear to be as keen for Coloccini to prolong his Newcastle career as the player himself.
Gutierrez believes his pal is receptive to extending his stay, saying: “Both Colo and I love life at Newcastle and want to spend our best years here.”
