Al Sadd became the first Qatari club to reach the Asian Champions League semifinals despite losing 2-1 in the second leg of its quarterfinal to Sepahan.
The Iranian team won the home leg 1-0 but was penalized for fielding an ineligible player and Al Sadd was given a 3-0 victory.
Knowing it had to a huge deficit to make up, Sepahan pressed from the start and two first-half goals from Emad Mohammed and Hassan Jafari raised the visitors’ hopes.
But Mamadou Niang’s late strike ensured Al Sadd advanced 4-2 on aggregate. The Qatar club now faces Suwon Bluewings of South Korea in the semifinals.
