Trabzonspor celebrates win over Inter Milan

ANKARA, Turkey (AP)—It’s party time for Trabzonspor, exactly 28 years after the last time the Turkish club beat Inter Milan.

Trabzonspor marked its Champions League debut by stunning 2010 champion Inter 1-0 Wednesday. The last time the clubs played, Trabzonspor defeated Inter 1-0 at home—on Sept. 14, 1983—in the first leg of their UEFA Cup series but lost 2-0 in the second leg and was eliminated.

The result is even more amazing considering how Trabzonspor made it into the group stage of this year’s competition. The club finished second to Fenerbahce in the Turkish league, and then lost to Benfica in the qualifying round. But because Fenerbahce was removed from the competition because it is under suspicion in a criminal probe into match-fixing, Trabzonspor was put back into the tournament.
