Osasuna claimed their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon thanks to two wonderful first-half goals.

After an eventful opening quarter the hosts went ahead when Nino tapped home on 28 minutes after a great pass from Kike Sola split the Sporting defence wide open.

Then, two minutes later, Osasuna doubled their lead through Alvaro Cejudo's volley from Sergio's cross into the top corner.

The home side should have been further ahead but gave Sporting a lifeline on 75 minutes when Diego Barral's shot went straight through goalkeeper Andres Fernandez, but they held on to claim all three points.

Osasuna picked up a valuable point at Atletico Madrid in the first game of the season and they started in a positive frame of mind on their maiden outing at home, Roland Lamah testing Juan Pablo with an rasping drive on 12 minutes.

Sporting's best effort of the first period came on 21 minutes when Oscar Trejo's powerful shot from outside the box had to be turned away by Fernandez.

Osasuna took the lead when a good ball from Cejudo put Sola free down the left, and he measured his pass into the middle perfectly between two defenders and the goalkeeper to leave Nino an open goal to fire into.

By contrast the home side`s second came from a piece of individual brilliance from Cejudo as he sent a controlled volley into the top corner from Sergio Fernandez's cross from the left.

Nino nearly got his second minutes after the break but shot just wide, and substitute Raul Garcia passed up a glorious chance to score on his return to the club when he headed wide with the goal gaping.

Sporting kept going, though, and Barral's shot on the turn on 75 minutes deceived the otherwise excellent Fernandez and rolled into the bottom corner.

Sporting went in search of an equaliser in the final 10 minutes but Sergio Alvarez's header wide was the closest they came.
