Two goals inside the opening 13 minutes from Peter MacDonald helped unbeaten Morton to a 4-1 home victory over Ayr to move to first place in the First Division.

The 30-year-old opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a well-struck free-kick from 25 yards.

Andrew Jackson then doubled the hosts' lead just a minute later with a close-range right-footed effort before MacDonald latched on to Jackson's pass to slide the ball past Ayr goalkeeper Kevin Cuthbert to make it three.

The away side managed a consolation with two minutes remaining thanks to substitute Mark Roberts' penalty, after Roberts himself was fouled by Morton defender Stuart McCaffrey in the area.

Morton immediately responded with a Peter Weatherson penalty in the 89th minute after Sean Fitzharris was brought down by Cuthbert.
