Forlan brings Uruguay’s underdog spirit to Inter

Newly signed striker Diego Forlan is bringing Uruguay’s underdog spirit to Inter Milan.

Having signed a two-year contract after transferring from Atletico Madrid, Forlan was asked at his presentation Thursday about the general perception that AC Milan is the favorite to hold on to its Serie A title.

“Brazil and Argentina were also favored, but then it was Uruguay that won the Copa America,” Forlan replied, recalling his country’s upset win during this year’s tournament in Argentina.

Forlan scored twice in the 3-0 win over Paraguay in the Copa America final in July, while at last year’s World Cup he was voted best player after Uruguay reached the semifinals.

While he is usually a playmaker with Uruguay, new Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini will likely use Forlan as a striker, with Samuel Eto’o having left for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

Inter also signed forward Mauro Zarate from Lazio before the transfer deadline Wednesday.

The deal for Forlan was reportedly worth ?5 million ($7 million).

“With Villarreal, Manchester United and Atletico I was a forward. I’ll talk with the manager and we’ll see what the best solution is,” Forlan said, adding that his age, 32, isn’t a problem. “I feel good and that’s what counts.”

Forlan impressed local media by speaking Italian and was presented with the No. 9 jersey. He said he wants to follow in the footsteps of other Uruguayans who have played for Inter, such as Ruben Sosa and Alvaro Recoba.

“I actually spoke to Ruben yesterday and it reminded me of when I was little how I watched him with Inter,” Forlan said. “And I would like to create the same relationship that Recoba has with president (Massimo) Moratti.”
