Pinto agress to take over as Costa Rica coach

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP)—Costa Rica football federation president Eduardo Li says Colombian coach Jorge Luis Pinto has agreed to take charge of the national team.
Li says Pinto has reached a “verbal agreement” to replace Ricardo La Volpe, following the Argentine’s resignation in August.
Federation spokeswoman Gina Escobar tells the AP on Thursday “the appointment will be confirmed in the next few days.”
The 58-year-old Pinto coached Costa Rican club Alajuelense to two league titles in 2003 and 2004. He was also in charge during Costa Rica’s qualifying campaign for the 2006 World Cup but was fired for poor results—although the team did eventually qualify for the tournament.
Pinto’s first match in charge looks likely to be the home friendly against Brazil on Oct. 7.
