Sabella looks to build team around Messi

Scott Parker was heading back to the Premier League after Tottenham Hotspur signed the England midfielder from West Ham on Wednesday, just hours before the close of the transfer window deadline.

Parker handed in a formal transfer request to West Ham, who were relegated from the top-flight last season, on Tuesday and the deal that will see the player move from east to north London, worth a reported £6million, was completed on Wednesday.

"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with West Ham United for the permanent transfer of Scott Parker," said a statement on Tottenham's website.

Parker, 30, was named the English Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year last season but, despite his efforts, the Hammers were still relegated.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said of Parker: "He's a good player. I think he's what we need. He's a good lad, great attitude.

"Footballer of the year last year and he'll be a good addition for this team—no doubt about that.

"He's a good character, a fantastic person, a proper family man, a real good pro. He'll be great around the place for us."

Parker, who has represented England at every level from Under-16 upwards, began his career with south London club Charlton Athletic, making his debut in 1997 aged 16, before joining another capital side, Chelsea, in January, 2004.

He moved out of London to join Newcastle in June, 2005 and went on to captain the side during two seasons at St James' Park.

Meanwhile Redknapp continued to insist Luka Modric would not be joining Chelsea who, unlike Tottenham, are in this season's Champions League and have long wanted to sign the Croatia playmaker.

But among the players who could be leaving White Hart Lane is Peter Crouch, with newly promoted QPR, who've already made several transfer window signings, as well as Sunderland interested in signing the tall England striker.

"There's three or four clubs wanting him and he wants to play football," Redknapp told Sky Sports.

"He's too good not to play. He's an outstanding player."
