Terry Venables says he is excited at the new crop of England stars
UNITED WE STAND ... Fergie's crop of kids, led by Tom Cleverley, can land England glory

I KNOW Alex Ferguson is a passionate Scot but there's no doubt he's handed Fabio Capello the perfect opportunity to redeem himself with England.

The Manchester United boss now has eight English stars in his squad including the most exciting crop of youngsters the country has seen in years.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley are all looking terrific for United and represent a new wave of talent that's set to keep United at the forefront at home and in Europe.

And with Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick on board, too, there's a terrific blend of youth and experience at Old Trafford which is so essential in the pursuit of success.

But there's this double-whammy effect that really excites me as a fan of English football AND the England team. Because there are so many talented Englishmen involved it means what's good for United is also good for England.

Capello certainly must be rubbing his hands at the thought of bringing these young United lads into his group.

We're up to fourth now in the FIFA world rankings — although I must admit that, at first, I was pretty surprised to hear that.

But, then again, when you look at the other teams and then examine the talent that we have available it's probably right.

So we have every reason to be optimistic about next summer's Euro 2012 finals without doing our usual trick of going completely overboard.

Yes, everyone was really down after such a poor World Cup showing by England out in South Africa.

That was understandable because we should have done far better.

In normal circumstances Capello would have been on his bike after a series of performances like that.

But, for whatever reasons, he's stayed on and now has the chance to put things right in the European Championships next summer.
