CANNON FIRE ... angry River Plate fans are soaked by police
FANS rioted as 33-time Argentine champions River Plate were relegated for the first time in their 110-year history after a 1-1 draw with Belgrano.
Thugs invaded the pitch to taunt players, forcing a 20-minute hold up.
And the game ended a minute early when cops turned fire hoses on angry fans among the 50,000 crowd.
Belgrano were leading 2-0 from the first leg, meaning they won promotion with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
River —nicknamed 'The Millionaires' due to their lofty status — will play in the 'Nacional B' league next season.
After the match, police outside the ground fired tear gas and more water cannons as trouble continued.
The notorious 'barrabrava' hooligans set fire to bins both inside and outside the ground while shop windows were also smashed.
Local reports said 55 people were injured in the clashes, mainly with head wounds from stones thrown by the crowds.
