The forward has had a mixed season at White Hart Lane, scoring just four league goals and voicing his concerns at a lack of action.
However, he completed a full game against Birmingham City on the final day of the season, although he was overshadowed by Roman Pavlyuchenko’s brace which relegated Alex McLeish’s side.
Despite his indifferent showing for Spurs, Fabio Capello named him for the squad against Switzerland, but his injury now means he will not be reporting along with the rest of the squad next Monday.
With Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney banned for the game, Fabio Capello’s attacking options have been further set back with Defoe’s withdrawal, but he has so far yet to call up a replacement.
