Basel edges Zurich for 14th Swiss league title

BASEL, Switzerland (AP)—FC Basel has won the Swiss league after beating FC Lucerne 3-0 in its final match on Wednesday.

Defending champion Basel secured its 14th title by finishing one point ahead of FC Zurich, which beat Thun 1-0.

Basel advances directly to the Champions League group stage next season.

Zurich enters in the third qualifying round, needing to beat two opponents to reach the 32-team group phase.

Also Wednesday, St. Gallen was relegated after losing its final match 4-2 at Young Boys.

Bellinzona climbed out of last place with a 2-0 home win against Grasshoppers Zurich.
