Champions League winners: First winner crowned in 1956

The 2011 UEFA Champions League final will be on May 28. Manchester United will face FC Barcelona at Wembley.
The first European Cup winner was crowned in 1956. This annual competition has gone through many changes since the 1950s. The UEFA Champions League was originally called the European Champions Club Cup. The rules, prize money and teams may have changed, but it is still considered one of the elite competitions in the world.

A total of 21 different clubs have won the Champions League. Real Madrid have the largest number of wins for the European Cup. They have been champions nine times. AC Milan follow them closely with seven wins. Since 1956, 12 clubs have been able to win more than once.
The 2011 Champions League
In 2011, FC Barcelona will attempt to claim its fourth title. Likewise, Manchester United will be trying to get its fourth title. FC Barcelona and Manchester United faced each other in a previous UEFA Champions League final. In 2009, FC Barcelona walked away as the champion.
