Rennes beats Saint-Etienne 2-1 in French league

PARIS (AP)—Jerome Leroy scored the winning goal as Rennes beat Saint-Etienne 2-1 on Sunday to hold on to fifth place in the French league.

Elsewhere, Lens was relegated to the second division after a 1-1 draw ith Monaco.

Marseille played Lorient later on Sunday, needing a victory to move within a point of leader Lille, which hosts Sochaux on Wednesday.

Lille beat holder Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the French Cup final on Saturday to win its first trophy since 1955.

Also Sunday, it was: Caen 2, Montpellier 0; Valenciennes 1, Auxerre 1; Arles-Avignon 1, Toulouse 0; and Nancy 3, Nice 0.

Lyon visits Brest on Monday.

On Wednesday, Bordeaux hosts Paris Saint-Germain.
