Wayne Rooney: Are you Watching Liverpool

Wayne Rooney smashed in the penalty to land Manchester United a record-breaking 19th league title and then beamed: It’s great to get one over Liverpool.

Roo’s ruthless 72nd-minute spot-kick, after referee Phil Dowd controversially ruled that Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson had fouled Javier Hernandez, means United are now the most successful side in the history of English football.

Soon after the final whistle Wazza marked the feat in his own cheeky style – by shaving the numerals one and nine into his chest hair and posting a picture on the internet via his Twitter account.

A point at Ewood Park was all United needed to wrap up their fourth championship in five years – and the twelfth of Sir Alex Ferguson’s glittering Old Trafford reign.

But the most significant fact of all for Rooney was that United have now eclipsed bitter rivals Liverpool’s previous high of 18 league crowns.

And Everton fan Roo reckoned that made yesterday’s triumph all the more satisfying – for himself and everyone connected with Old Trafford.

The England hitman said: “We’re now the most successful team in English football. We have overtaken Liverpool.

“Being an Evertonian, it is all the more special for me that it is United’s 19th title – and the one that has taken us past our main rivals Liverpool.”

Rooney admitted he was a nervous wreck as he stepped up to take the decisive second-half penalty – especially after Dowd took the best part of two minutes before finally pointing to the spot.

The Red Devils ace said: “It was terrifying standing there, just waiting to take the penalty because it was a long time before I got to hit it.

“And it was on my mind that this was the penalty that would win us our 19th title. But I just had to try to compose myself.

“The main thing was I knew where I was putting it – I had been practising them all week in training.”

Rooney, who threatened to quit the club in November before signing a new deal, now has 15 goals this season and he added: “After all the ups and downs I’ve had – and the year I’ve had – it was great to see it go in. “
