PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain inched past Lyon in the race for Champions League football after a 1-1 draw at Monaco on Saturday, while Sochaux thrashed Europa League qualification rivals Bordeaux 4-0.

PSG could have gone three points clear of Lyon, who occupied the third and final Champions League qualifying spot going into the weekend, but they had to settle for a point against an obdurate Monaco side.

The hosts took the lead in the 24th minute, with Brazilian defender Adriano beating PSG goalkeeper Gregory Coupet with a flicked header from a Lukman Haruna free-kick.

Deputising for the injured Stephane Ruffier, Monaco goalkeeper Sebastien Chabbert produced a series of eye-catching stops but was beaten in the 51st minute when Mevlut Erding slammed home a technically impeccable volley.

Sochaux secured victory at Bordeaux with a four-goal blitz inside the first 30 minutes that prompted the home supporters behind the visitors' goal to leave the stadium en masse shortly before half-time.

Brown Ideye broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, with Damien Perquis capitalising on slack marking to head home a second two minutes later.

Ideye out-paced Bordeaux right-back Mathieu Chalme before teeing up Ryad Boudebouz in the 22nd minute and the Nigerian then claimed his second goal of the game with a header from Marvin Martin's cross.

With Lorient held 0-0 at home by Toulouse, the emphatic win lifted Sochaux into sixth place, which is likely to yield a Europa League berth due to Lille and PSG's involvement in the French Cup final.

League leaders Lille, a point clear of champions Marseille, will look to open up a four-point advantage when they visit third-bottom Nancy in Saturday's late game. Marseille visit Lyon on Sunday.

Elsewhere on Saturday, a first-half Alejandro Alonso penalty saw Saint-Etienne to a 1-0 win at relegated Arles-Avignon that took Les Verts to within a point of sixth spot.

Auxerre gave their bid to avoid the drop another fillip with a 1-0 defeat of Montpellier that lifted them to 12th.

Second-bottom Lens drew 1-1 at Caen but demotion to Ligue 2 remains all but inevitable as they are now eight points from safety with only four games to play.
