Iker Muniain struck a last-gasp winner as Athletic Bilbao fought back from a goal down to claim an unlikely 2-1 victory over local rivals Osasuna and climb back into the Europa League places.

Lowly Osasuna looked to have taken total control of the match in a seven-minute spell just after half-time when they went ahead through Kike Sola and Athletic lost defender Xavi Castillo to a red card.

However, the 10 men of Athletic drew level through star striker Fernando Llorente in the 69th minute and the visitors then received a further boost in the 88th minute when Osasuna also had a played sent off, Sergio Fernandez the man to see red.

Athletic then stole all three points in injury-time when the 18-year-old Muniain curled a long-range strike into an unguarded net after Osasuna goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez had raced out of his area and collided with team-mate Nelson.

The result sees Athletic move back into the top six while Osasuna remain just two points above the relegation zone after slumping to their third successive defeat.

There was little sign of the drama to come during a goalless first half, but Osasuna quickly found themselves in the box seat after the break.

They took the lead in the 51st minute when Athletic failed to clear a free-kick into the area and Kike Sola did well to spin on the spot and hook a shot past Gorka Iraizoz from six yards out.

Things got even better for Osasuna soon after when Athletic lost Castillo to a second yellow after clipping the heels of Nelson, and within 60 seconds of that incident the home side almost went 2-0 ahead when Javier Camunas' right-wing cross deflected off an Athletic defender and hit the front post.

Athletic were rocking, but they weathered the storm and managed to get back on level terms thanks to Llorente.

The Spain international had failed to score in his previous five matches but he was back on the scoresheet after sending a glancing header past Ricardo following a pinpoint cross from David Lopez.

Osasuna were still favourites to pick up the three points against depleted Athletic despite that setback, but with time running out they lost their numerical advantage - and moments later they had also lost the match.

Centre-back Sergio was handed his marching orders after being booked for a second time after dragging down Markel Susaeta on the edge of the box, and Athletic made the most of that by netting an injury-time winner not long after.

Muniain, Nelson and Ricardo all sprinted to get to a through-ball and, after the two Osasuna men took each other out, the Athletic youngster sent a first-time shot into the gaping goal from out near the left touchline.
