Goals by Kevin Constant and Michele Marcolini saw Chievo overcome the sending-off of Luca Rigoni as they closed to within one point of Bologna in Serie A with a 2-0 win.

Constant enjoyed an easy tap-in to put the hosts ahead after 15 minutes before Rigoni was given a straight red card for a professional foul in first-half injury time.

However, they managed to extend their lead seven minutes from time when Marcolini produced a superb lob to collect only their fifth home win of the season.

Chievo impressed from the outset, Robert Guana and Davide Moscardelli trying their luck before they took the lead.

Constant simply tapped the ball home after Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano had saved Sergio Pellissier's 20-yard effort.

Viviano did well to save Mariano Bogliacino's drilled shot from the edge of the area before Gennaro Sardo almost doubled the lead when his shot from the edge of the box hit the bar with the keeper beaten.

Moscardelli was narrowly wide before the visitors finally went close, Stefano Sorrentino doing well to save Marco Di Vaio's header.

After dominating the first half Chievo suffered a blow as Rigoni was dismissed for a challenge from behind on Gaston Ramirez.

Pellissier missed a great chance when he fired wide with just the keeper to beat which heralded a period of Bologna pressure.

Da Vaio put a couple of shots over with Riccardo Meggiorini and Igor Radovanovic also trying their luck.

Pellissier went close twice before the hosts did double the lead when Marcolini lobbed Viviano from distance.
