Ayr missed the opportunity to cement their place in the Second Division play-off places as they were held to a 1-1 draw by East Fife.
The Fifers started the better of the two teams and took the lead after just eight minutes when Matthew Park poked home Robert Linn's right-wing cross from close range.
Alan Trouten levelled the scores for third-placed Ayr in the 16th minute with a crisp finish from 12 yards after collecting Willie Easton's slide-rule pass.
Mark Roberts had a good chance to hand Ayr all three points on the stroke of half-time but his penalty was parried clear by Fife goalkeeper Michael Brown after he was brought down by Scott Durie.
