Bayern-target Heynckes set to reveal future

BERLIN (AFP) - Veteran Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes will discuss his future with the German club's bosses on Monday as the press here make him favourite to take over at Bayern Munich.

"I'll talk with the bosses on Monday after training and I hope to make public my decision soon after," said Heynckes on Sunday after his side's 2-0 win at Schalke 04.

The 65-year-old's Leverkusen contract expires at the end of the season and he has been tipped to succeed Bayern trainer Louis van Gaal, who has been told his contract will be terminated at the end of the season.

Leverkusen's director of sport Rudi Voeller is keen to keep Heynckes, who won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 1998.

But Heynckes, a friend of Bayern president Uli Hoeness, could be tempted to coach Bayern for the third time.

He won two league titles with Bayern between 1987 and 1991, then took over for five games at the end of the 2009 season after the Bavarian giants sacked ex-Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Having coached Leverkusen since June 2009, his club has already found a replacement, should Heynckes leave.

Freiburg coach Robin Dutt has been approached and is reported to be interested in the Bayer job should Heynckes leave.

Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga behind leaders Dortmund with seven games left while Freiburg are eighth in the table.
