ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP)—Roque Santa Cruz and Nelson Haedo Valdez have been left off the Paraguay team that will play Mexico and the United States in exhibition games this month.
Paraguay is coached by Gerardo Martino, who led the country to the second round of the World Cup last year.
He says he omitted Santa Cruz and Haedo Valdez so they could play important club games. Santa Cruz plays for Blackburn in England and Valdez is with Hercules in Spain. Paraguay’s scoring punch could come from Argentina-born Lucas Barrios, who plays with Borussia Dortmund.
Paraguay plays Mexico in Oakland, Calif., on March 26 and the United States in Nashville, Tenn., on March 29.
