Ryan McCann netted the game's only goal as Ayr boosted their promotion challenge with a hard-fought win over Alloa.

Going into the encounter on the back of two consecutive league victories, the Honest Men started well and dominated the opening exchanges.

It was the visitors who fashioned the first opening, though, when Michael McGowan struck just wide from range.

But that proved their only chance in a poor first-half display, in which the hosts took a 45th-minute lead through McCann.

Michael Moffat was the orchestrator, sending in a delicious centre which McCann duly converted.

Alloa desperately tried to get back into the clash in the second period, but came up short as Ayr comfortably secured the three points.
