Posted Saturday, February 26, 2011 by PA
Ayr cemented their position in third place following a 2-0 win over second-places Brechin at Somerset Park.
Goals from Stuart Bannigan and Scott McLaughlin in either half sealed the win for Brian Reid's men as they closed to within two points of the visitors.
In a first half full of chances, it took until the second minute of time added on for the opening goal as Bannigan turned in McLaughlin's right-wing cross from 12 yards.
Ayr doubled their slender lead 18 minutes after the restart as McLaughlin rose highest in the area to powerfully head home Michael Moffat's cross from the left.
Brechin struck the woodwork two minutes from time as Rory McAllister saw his effort from six yards rebound off the crossbar, but Ayr held on for all three points.
